Questions to ask before accepting a contract technology role
Clarify the work, schedule, pay terms, assignment length and onboarding steps before you commit.

Contract roles can offer a chance to contribute to a defined project or join a team with an immediate need. Before accepting, make sure you understand the assignment and the terms that affect your day-to-day work.
What will I be responsible for?
Ask what you will work on, which skills you will use and how your work will be evaluated. If the role supports a project, clarify its current stage and the goals expected during your assignment. This helps you compare the opportunity with your experience and interests.
Where and when will I work?
Confirm the work location, remote or onsite expectations, normal hours, time zone, shift coverage and any travel. If the arrangement is hybrid, ask how often the team expects you to be onsite and whether that schedule can change.
What are the pay and engagement terms?
Ask for the pay rate, pay frequency, expected hours and how overtime or additional hours are handled under the written terms that apply to your role. Clarify who your employer or contracting party is, how time is recorded and whom to contact with a payroll question. Read the agreement carefully and ask for clarification before signing if a term is unclear.
How long is the assignment?
Ask for the expected start date and duration, whether extensions are possible and what could lead to an early end. An estimate is not necessarily a guarantee, so understand what the agreement says about the assignment period and notice.
What happens before the start date?
Ask about interviews, background checks, identity or work-authorization documents, client onboarding, system access and any training. Find out what needs to be completed before you can begin and who will tell you when each step is complete.
Who should I contact during the assignment?
Confirm who handles questions about the work, schedule, timesheets, pay and assignment changes. Knowing the right contact makes it easier to resolve routine issues quickly.
